Chapter Sixteen

Willow

Rocky’s been quiet, but never fear. Now he’s back with updates here… Christmas is coming and so is the snow. Tomorrow evening, just so you know. Over the countryside and over the town; there’s gonna be a midwinter snowdown!

Willow typed in her forecast, then added:

And remember folks, it’s Christmastime.

That means parties, mince pies and wine.

It’s also a time for love and good cheer.

Let’s all be friends for the rest of the year.

I sense a change, a really good omen…

We should all be kind to Marcus Bowman!

Would that do any good? Time would tell. Willow pinched some of the food Marcus had cooked the day before and heated it in the microwave. No way was she throwing it out. She was sure he cooked it fine by normal standards. Her cooking wasn’t up to much and she was too exhausted to think about meals. As she waited for it to heat, she went to the common room to check if Marcus wanted anything. She approached him hesitantly. Her leg muscles tensed even more as she got closer. Was he still in a vile mood?

‘Hey. I’m making some dinner. Well, heating the leftovers. Can I get you anything?’

‘Rocky Rainman’s head on a stick.’ He lounged back on the armchair he was sitting in and steepled his fingers.

Ok. Still angry then.

‘I’m not sure I can do that.’

‘Just when I hoped he’d buggered off, here he is.’ He waved his phone about.

Willow tried to smile but didn’t quite meet his eye. How could she look at him when he was being so insulting?

‘And what the hell is this? He’s even got a poem about me.’

‘Oh? Isn’t that good?’

‘Good? Have you seen it? It’s a total piss-take. His followers are having a field day. “I’ll be kind to Marky-boy even though he can’t predict a fart after a night on the beans. All hail the rainman.” What utter dumbfuckery.’

‘If he’s asking people to be nice, isn’t that good? It sounds like he’s trying to make peace.’

‘Yeah, right.’ He smacked his palm on the arm of the chair. ‘I’m sick of him.’

‘Maybe some food would help?’ Heat stung the back of her neck as guilt attacked her skin. She didn’t want to hurt Marcus like this but she couldn’t give up forecasting. Not now. Obviously her idea had completely backfired. Maybe she should go for a more direct appeal to her followers.

‘Yeah, ok, thanks. Just whatever’s left,’ he said. ‘And is there any more wine stashed away? Other than the one I cooked with yesterday?’

‘I’m not sure. I’ll have a look.’ But she raised her eyebrow. Was brooding with a bottle of wine a good idea?

The guests had got their chippy tea and gone straight to their room for an early night as they were leaving the next morning. Willow served Marcus his food before withdrawing to the kitchen. She’d eat in there and avoid further confrontation.

As she finished, the kitchen door opened, and Marcus came in with his plate. ‘Why are you in here?’

‘Thought I’d leave you in peace.
